California town to get WiFi everywhere http://tinyurl.com/xdi8
The 50,000 people living in Cerritos, Calif., are expected to have citywide, wireless Internet access available next month. Aiirnet Wireless has agreed to place shoebox-sized radio transmitters throughout the town in the Los Angeles area in what's believed to be the nation's first such installation. Aiirnet believes there are another dozen California cities where it could do the same thing, according to the Los Angeles Times. The city will pay for about 60 access accounts that will be used by building inspectors, enforcement officers and others who work in the field. "We've been getting complaints almost every week from people who want high-speed service and can't get it," said city manager Arthur Gallucci. The local phone company, Verizon Communications (VZ: news, chart, profile), is unable to provide DSL service to the southern third of the city, and the local cable company has not upgraded its system to handle high-speed service.
