FYI, this is the type of activity some San Diego WUG members are doing as
part of the socalfreenet project. We're happy to help socalwug members do
likewise!

Matt, Ben and Mike, SDWUG members, got together last night to assemble and
configure all the gear for this Saturday's new node installation at Golden
Hill, 'Casa 23'. This new node will be an 802.11b access point, initially
relaying from Pink Palace.

The install went smoothly, as far as these things go. We started around
8:30pm and fniished around 11:30, and then talked more until midnight :-).
We took our time, as Matt and Ben had never really walked through our
standard Pebble install before and wanted to understand it.

This node is a single Soekris 4511 board with two radios: an 802.11a 'bare'
PCMCIA Proxim card taken from a dissassembled 8571 and a 200mW miniPCI
802.11b EL-2511MP EnGenius card.

The only glitch in the setup was getting the 802.11b miniPCI card started.
By default Pebble won't start it, but with the addition of an modprobe
hostap_pci statement in the right place (details), it fired right up.

The big piece left to build is the solar power setup. Ben has the batteries,
controller and panels and will be putting it all together before Saturday.
We'll post photos and equipment lists for all the solar gear when we're
done.

This new node will be located at C street and 23rd and is a Spanish style
building, hence Casa 23. We plan to share the existing 802.11a AP on Pink
Palace that is currently feeding La Cresta and then re-broadcast.

cheers, michael
