A few weeks ago, I expressed in this forum an interest in networks of
wireless sensors. Some others of you responded to declare a similar
interest. I've been collecting information and studying it as I have
the opportunity, but I haven't yet started any projects.

I just wanted to let you all know that the subject appears to be on an
ascending hype path, which I think is a good thing. The August issue of
/Computer/, the journal of the Computer Society, which I received today,
is devoted to the subject. It carries a half-dozen articles, including
a subject overview and a diverse set of application examples.

One of the points that the overview author makes is that the computing
industry has gone through major changes about once per decade. He lists
the progression from mainframes, to minicomputers, to personal computers,
and to mobile devices. He then contends that wireless sensors are the
next step along that evolution. Perhaps we should jump on the bandwagon
now, before it gets going too fast.

I'm interested in organizing a loose association of others with interest
in this field. Initially, I suggest just a mailing list. If and when we
attract a critical mass, we can consider meetings and other activities.
If you are interested in participating in such a group, please send a
note to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "info scwsnug" in the body, then
follow the directions to subscribe if you want. As this is not the main
purpose of THIS list, let's take most of the discussion to the new list.
