Here's more on the project - with links to some of the companies involved and the excerpt of the winning proposal I passed around at the meeting last night... http://wireless.weblogsinc.com/entry/6324322665576310/
City of Lompoc CA Creates City-Wide Wi-Fi Utility Posted Sep 23, 2004, 5:30 PM ET by Mike Outmesguine The City of Lompoc in the Central Coast of California (about 2 hours north of Los Angeles) has been working on deploying a new city-wide Wi-Fi broadband utility. This week marks the final stages of company selection (of which I worked with a proposing company) and the beginning of the project. City documents show that Pacific Coast Cabling should be awarded the nearly $1.5 million prime contract to deploy Tropos Networks mesh network technology in more than 100 nodes around the 5+ square mile city. Proxim will provide the wireless backhaul equipment. Network subscriber management and billing will be provided by Pronto Networks. The City has said that they want 99.99% coverage of "ubiquitous" Wi-Fi to all developed areas of the city. Subscribers to the for-pay Lompoc Broadband Utility will be able to get on the network at 256 kbps or higher using Intel Mobile Centrino built-in wireless devices, off-the-shelf networking cards, and off-the-shelf client adapters. This "ubiquitous wireless" concept caused much consternation on the part of bidders, but it appears that the vendors and contractor are confident they can pull it off. The Lompoc City Council voted 5-0 in favor of the proposal (PDF link). "Four Nines" of coverage is a stellar target to shoot for. I wish them luck and will be watching how this unfolds over the coming months. By the way, the target 100% completion date is December 31st 2004. Lompoc city officials have stated that this new service will help grow the economy and therefore they want to get it up and running ASAP. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Larry G.
