The Sierra Wireless AirCard 580 has an external antenna, but SW disavows responsibility. I use a roof-mounted antenna for my SierraWireless Aircard 555 (http://www.socalwug.org/sierraaircard.htm) which is the old-slow 80kbps Verizon service. I've been eyeing the AC580 - though VZW doesn't even have me on their LA coverage map! :(
