fyi I take it as a good sign that the new 2005 ARRL Handbook has a formal section, albeit short, on software radio (aka software defined radio (SDR)).
http://www.arrl.org/catalog/9280/ Such a section on software radio does not appear in the 2004 reference. Eric Blossom in Issue 122 of the Linux Journal describes software radio as "the technique of getting code as close to the antenna as possible." For those of you who may be unfamiliar with the world of amateur radio, this radio frequency reference book is also for you (as are the other good references on the ARRL web site). It is the accessible RF mentor that we either never had or who has left the scene. (Fry's and Ham Radio Outlet, both in Burbank, carry the reference). For those of you who may want to get your feet wet in the area of low cost software radio, see for example, - GNUradio - FlexRadio - RFSpace - WinRadio Mark -- Mark S.
