It's done in the TCP header, not javascript. The wireless access point
runs a captive portal server which redirects all traffic to a
pre-specified address until the user authenticates.

It's built into hardware such as:
Handlink WSG-4000
D-Link DS-3100
Colubris CN3000
Orinioco AP2500

And it's available as software from a variety of places:
NoCat Auth
Patronsoft's FirstSpot

Subject: [SOCALWUG] wifi hotspot & redirection question...

Hello...
just wondering if anyone knows how some of these commercial hotspots
(such as tmobile in starbucks or in the 4star hotels) are able to
automatically redirect the user's browerser to a specific ip webhost
page to login to the hotspot network for internet usage.

i know they use some javascript to redirect the user... but how do they
even redirect any/all traffic from the new user who hasn't logged in to
the hotspot's login page?

anyone know?

thanks!
Kram
