Vadim, If SOCI receives a patch that improves current CMake-based configuration and does not break SOCI as a whole, it will be merged. Even if it may be helpful for some users, I personally have neither interest nor resources to enable potential for use of external builders. AFAIS, there is no version number in installation.md Every time I prepare a new release, I have to keep in mind to update two places, as listed here https://github.com/SOCI/soci/issues/234 I agree, it would be best if it is in version.h header, but I had no time to do it myself.
