Given that he's looked at Turbocash and Quicken I would surmise that 
he's running a Windows OS. Gnucash doesn't have a Windows port nor any 
plans for one. I suppose you could run it under Cygwin, but I don't know 
if it would be worth your while. I haven't been terribly impressed by 
it, but YMMV.
