I've always thought fetchmail would be a good fit for this sort of
stuff. However, the FAQ's say that it doesn't support Hotmail, so it
may not fit the bill exactly.

Gmail fits any pop3 mail agent so that wouldn't be a bit of trouble.
Having a quick look at your suggestion however also seems a good fit
and would do the job.

Haven't gone into the gory details tho'.
