I attended the following lecture this evening and just want to say when a man of this caliber speaks to a room full of law students and senior citizens about the harm being done by the Patriot Act, and he is taken seriously, it deepens my concern about the direction our nation has taken under Bush's leadership. He has traveled to more than 50 countries and has worked on human rights issues in every region of the world. As a member of the White House Apparel Industry Partnership Task Force, he helped found the Fair Labor Association. In 1980, he played a key role in proposing and campaigning for the first U.S. law providing for political asylum, a provision added to the Refugee Act of 1980. He also proposed, drafted and campaigned for the Torture Victim Protection Act, a federal statute that was designed to give victims of the worst crimes anywhere a remedy in U.S. courts.
