Dear Guru,
Making social science relevant and contextual is a huge challenge.
Oftentimes, teachers reduce the subject to mere recall of dates and events;
text books often project prevailing political standpoints; students don’t
see the value of it as it doesn’t belong the ‘ core sciences’  domain.
Thus, the entire system casts social sciences as a “dry“ subject.

But it does not have to be so.

For social sciences to come alive, it has to be taught meaningfully -
Learners need to be able to connect it with their own personal contexts.
For example, teaching the timeline by having children plot their own
timeline first helps make the learning fun and the tool, application
oriented and meaningful. It makes learning effective.

Learning is an integrated process. Therefore, can we think of weaving
‘subjects’  in a way that is wholesome and not compartmentalised as seen in
the subject divide our system is obsessed with? Can we draw inspiration
from teachers like Mr. Mandlik (video below

whose students reflect on their social worlds through art? Once we begin
see learning as holistic process, the hierarchy we assign to subjects like
Maths or Science over art or history or civics also get ironed out.

When teachers teach social sciences in a way that does not fragment
knowledge, when students’ knowledge becomes the resource and everyday
objects become the tool and subject matter for learning, the effect is
magic!
