Adding error counters to error frames gives much sense to reporting of bus-errors even on CAN controllers (such the mcp251x) that don't specify the kind of error (neither if it's a TX or RX one). An user application inspecting REC and TEC counters can monitor the "quality" of the bus even on these chips.
