Hello Franck,

you're looking at the Lilo diagnostics here. The 'L' is called a boot
loader message, while '00' is a disk error code. Here they mean "Unable
to start the second stage boot loader - Internal error". See the Lilo
manual, probably somewhere in /usr/share/doc.

The problem is most likely in the MBR. The manual reports a corrupted
map file and disk geometry problems as possible causes. CF cards with
the MBR installed on one host quite frequently cause geometry problems
if transferred to another, because the two BIOSes see different things.
And somewhere caught in the middle is the boot loader.

If you can boot the soekris off the network with the CF card installed,
just reinstaling the MBR with fdisk will probably fix the problem. Then
chroot onto the CF card's Linux fs and run lilo (if you run lilo from
the NFS partition using the '-r' option for the chroot, then both Lilo
versions must be the same, or you will get weird error messages yet
again).

If you don't have NFS set up yet, look here:

Setting it up might take some time, but having an NFS root on standby is
definitely worthwile when working with CF cards.

If you want even more info about boot loader issues than the Lilo manual
supplies, check out the "How It Works" series:

Have fun;)
