I segment the services on my 4801 into core (routing, firewall, dhcp,
ntp, etc.) and optional (squid cache, large mirror). My flash card
contains the OS and my HDD contains the large data area for my
optional services. The HDD is normally spun down to reduce power
consumption, noise and risk of damage due to accidental bumping.

When the SSD drives (flash-based drives with ATA/SATA interfaces)
become available and at a reasonable price, I may migrate over to that
and just have a single storage device (SSD) for my system. Or perhaps
I'll still have a dual setup, with the large flash drive being for the
OS and data and the small (cheaper) flash card being for spool and
logging areas (since they will wear out the flash faster). I consider
flash devices cheap enough to see them as consumables. If they only
last a couple of years due to lots of writing activity, I can cope
with that. In two years I'll rip out the old one and for the same $$$
put in a larger one or for less $$$ put in the same size.

                                Regards,

                                        Richard....
