Hi, Have you looked at products from falcom (www.falcom.de)?, they make a wide range of Tri-band GSM (incl. GPRS/GPS/EDGE) devices which can be easily mated to an embedded system. These are connected either through the serial port or USB (depends on the model).
I've used both the Tango and STEPP II for projects and they work well. For small form factor or environmental divers operation the industrial models are probably better. Alternatives are available from www.wavecom.com and multimate to name but a few.
