Thank you all who replied, including Paul who replied off list.

I will be rebuilding a circuit with a PNP transistor circuit as I can't 
have this project default to on for 20 seconds while the machine boots, 
it needs to start off.

As it happens I do also have a purpose for a NPN version of this 
circuit. So all is not lost.

I think I may have let a tiny bit of blue smoke out through my 
experiementation, as GPIO00 to GND now reads 3.57v instead of 3.3v, and 
the relay circuit wont actuate. Although with a multimeter everything 
appears to behave it's self.

I think I still have one of those kids electronics kits under the bed 
that I can use to prototype with and see if I really have let the smoke out.
