This is a little embarrassing.... During all my net5501 BIOS work I managed to introduce a bug that affect only the net45xx series.... In the newest comBIOS 1.31 for the net45xx series board, the CPU cache is disabled. I will post an updated 1.31b on the Soekris website soon.
