Ah, yes,  now I remember why I chose those majors - the kernel allocates 
255..240
on 1st come 1st served, so I chose the numbers least likely to be taken 
by others.

interesting, thanks for the info.

FYI - I did some hacking to add a sysfs interface which supported 
byte-wide GPIO use.
Is that something that you might want ?
