From what I can gather, the first step is to do a PCI dump and see what's where. Next you look for a bit showing an un-used counter. Past that it's the typical turn it off (possibly twice ..) before you touch anything. Program it up in the order they show. Then turn it back on again. Counters typically are very picky about doing things in the proper order. Past that I can't help much. When I want to bang bits in assembler I do it on a PIC Micro.
