Hi all,
I've subscribed recently because I've bought 2 5501 to use as
laboratory, with the goal of lowering power compsumption in the server
farm of a couple of company for which I'm consultant.

I use debian. I've seen previous messages on performance in unbuffered
i/o to sata interface (which I also suffer), I've applied the
suggested patch to the kernel to get sata working without need of
device to be exposed in PCI bus registers without success.

Yesterday I downloaded the new 1.32h BIOS but, after flashing I got
lot of i/o error and I'm no more able to mount root. Since I'm still
in lab environment I decided to reinstall from scratch but PXE netboot
of debian stock netinstall kernel recognize my toshiba 80GB sata disk
as a 5000TB disk, failing i/o on lot of sectors.

I've a dmesg output but I think is useless, because I can't reach my
previous installed kernels and debian stock netinstall does not
include any disk device driver in itself. So it boots ok and let me
begin installation process. As soon as install scripts try to load
ata/ide/scsi modules to probe hardware it starts to output i/o errors
filling up the interesting part of dmesg.

The default debian netinstall is:
Linux version 2.6.18-5-486 (Debian 2.6.18.dfsg.1-13)
([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc version 4.1.2 20061115...

Please don't tell me I've to cross compile a more recent 2.6 to
replace the netboot debian kernel...

Thanks to all.

Marco Basso.
