The comBIOS sees the controller, but not the disks behind it. Here is some
information which I have gathered,
These are with FLASH set to primary and with the HDD jumpers set to CS, or MA,
or SL, the result is the same.

Slot 17 is the PCI bus IDE controller. The OS on this CF card is Centos. If I
let it boot and examine with lspci, I see:
# lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] ELanSC520 Microcontroller
00:11.0 RAID bus controller: Integrated Technology Express, Inc. IT/ITE8212

00:14.0 Ethernet controller: National Semiconductor Corporation DP83815

Which seems to match what the BIOS shows.
If I try to run fdisk -l all I see is /dev/hda, not the HDD, a WD Caviar.

Which I presume is the on-board IDE controller.
If I set FLASH to secondary and then repower the net4501, I can only boot via
PXE, that is, comBIOS sees no drive 80 or 81.
Now, if I set FLASH back to primary and insert my CF with debian etch, I get
different results.
The comBIOS output is the same except that the CF card is identified as the new
card with debian etch on it.
However, the system never boots as the following is displayed:
Uniform Multi-Platform E-IDE driver Revision: 7.00alpha2

root file system never mounts.
In other words, etch sees the PCI card IDE controller and is looking to that
for the root file system, so this suggests that the comBIOS sees at least
enough of the controller to tell the etch kernel that it is there and the etch
kernel uses this controller rather than the on-board IDE controller with the CF
card.
If I then remove the CF card and PXEBOOT the net4501 into the debian installer
via tftp, the installer never sees the IT8212 controller.
I gather from a number of google and yahoo searches that this interface is
supported by debian etch.
Any thoughts would be appreciated,
Thanks,
Heather

Subject: Re: [Soekris] Installing Debian on a 4501 with HDD on PCI Adapter
Hi Heather,
does the 4501's comBIOS see the the disk? In that case I see no reason
why you couldn't install Debian on a PC i.o. through PXE, and transfer
the disk to the Soekris afterwards.
If not, look into the archives, you'll find many reports about seen/not
seen HDDs, some (by far not all) followed by a solution, like removing
the CF or setting the disk's jumpers to CS.
