So, for a number of applications, 256MB is quite usable. Obviously if you go whole hog. you may find that's a bit constraining. I have a couple of them of both sized running various proof of concept router/firewall/utility application scenarios and I don't routinely find that I wish to be using the 512MB one vs the 256MB one.
