I found out that in many cases antenna diversity doesn't work properly when different kinds of antenne will be used. In one installation I noticed quite unstable W-LAN connections; the received signal strength on a laptop changed abruptly by about 20dB on a timescale of several seconds. One of the antennas was a internal chip antenna and the other one a stacked dipole antenna about three meters away from the AP. The design of the "pseudo-Ethernet" W-LAN also doesn't allow proper antenna diversity and transmit power setting because it is a broadcast media and not timeslot based like GSM or DECT.
