I have been using a net5501-70 with an Intel Pro 1000 GT PCI card,  
using m0n0wall (FreeBSD) with good results.

The card fits like a glove. You have to remove the 5501 board,  
connect the 1000 GT NIC, and then slide everything into the back  
panel of the case, re-attach the 5501 board.
