After running stably for well over 100 days, my net5501-70 died
abruptly last night.

The first symptom was no I/O, neither on the network nor on the
console. The power, error and disk LEDs started blinking synchronously
off and on quite slowly, around one to two blinks per second.

I removed the power and let the box rest for a while, and then plugged
in the power again. This time there was also no I/O nor console, but
the same three LEDs were blinking ferociously, almost lighting up
constantly.

I measured the voltage from the soekris-shipped SMP powersupply, and
it showed a stable 12.07V, so I ruled out that as a root cause.

There seems to be a power-up reset problem with some 5501s, explained
here: http://www.soekris.com/issue0005.htm

I tried what is suggested on the issue page, but didn't get any
further--the problem persists. Some measurements on JP9 (which seems
to be directly routed to the resistor circled in red on the issue
page):

Box powered on first, then put multimeter on JP9:
    1.00 kOhm approx

Box powered off, pub multimeter on JP9:
    94.4 kOhm approx

If I hold the multimeter on JP9 while inserting the power, the box
doesn't light up at all. It starts blinking just like before when I
remove the multimeter, though. If I short JP9 after applying power,
nothing happens; the three LEDs still blink quickly.

There is nothing on the console, except exactly when I plug in the
power. Most of the time I get one byte (with value 0x80 or 0xC0),
sometimes nothing, and sometimes two bytes (0x80 and then 0xC0, or
maybe the other way around). Removing the console cable and putting it
in again (powered on or off) does not help.

Removing the CF disk doesn't help, it only stops the disk light from
blinking; the power and error lights blink quickly as before.

Have anyone experienced this problem, or is it something known that I
have missed? I'd rather not ship the unit back and get a new one,
without having the problem properly fixed for the future.

Sven
