FWIW, I've encountered door security systems that provide admin 
interfaces as a win9x-era application. The system itself is an 
industrial-grade embedded device, often with a keypad and a small LCD; 
it's just a pain to manage the thing that way, and you aren't pulling 
logs off of it without a client computer anyway.

I'd guess the OP is talking about something similar, with the desire of 
getting a friendly remote interface to it.
