After playing around a bit I see more of a pattern, but am no
closer to an acceptable solution.

Things aren't quite random. Detection of the CF works better
with the case open, which is odd because the thing is not
generating much heat and I can't see how else the open case
could make a difference. On a cold reboot I am most likely to
get "Pri Sla CHS -- Mbyte". ^P reboot on the serial console
often gives the desired "Pri Mas SILICONSYSTEMS INC 2GB
LBA Xlt 1016-64-63 2049 Mbyte". Reboot within the OS usually
gives nothing. Once on site the thing needs to reboot cleanly
without a serial console and someone standing by to hit ^P, of
course.

It's pretty clear that there's a timing issue somewhere in
the BIOS and that the time spent checking the memory on a cold
reboot is playing a role. Any ideas?
