After playing around a bit I see more of a pattern, but am no closer to an acceptable solution.
> There is then a brief delay and then, seemingly at random, one of > Pri Mas SILICONSYSTEMS INC 2GB LBA Xlt 1016-64-63 2049 Mbyte > or > Pri Sla CHS -- Mbyte > or nothing. Things aren't quite random. Detection of the CF works better with the case open, which is odd because the thing is not generating much heat and I can't see how else the open case could make a difference. On a cold reboot I am most likely to get "Pri Sla CHS -- Mbyte". ^P reboot on the serial console often gives the desired "Pri Mas SILICONSYSTEMS INC 2GB LBA Xlt 1016-64-63 2049 Mbyte". Reboot within the OS usually gives nothing. Once on site the thing needs to reboot cleanly without a serial console and someone standing by to hit ^P, of course. It's pretty clear that there's a timing issue somewhere in the BIOS and that the time spent checking the memory on a cold reboot is playing a role.
