I run a net4801 with the comBIOS version it came with, about 5 years
ago, 1.24 I think, and I never had a problem with it, at least not with
CF-card only (most problems reported on this list seems to involve CF +
IDE). Maybe you could be a bit more specific:

- which OS?
- which boot loader?
- what error messages?
- CF only?
- which CF brands do / don't work?

What you describe sounds like hardware (e.g. IDE controller) trouble to
me, but it's hard to tell from a distance of course. Do some specific CF
brands _consistently_ work? Did you try alternative boot loaders? Linux
+ Lilo should always work, if not then you very likely have a hardware
problem.
