Yeah, separate the functionality a bit more... one plausible scenario might look like:
If you want an asterisk running on a soekris, do that, but put the e1/ip gateway in another box, eg a redfone... then put the fsx interfaces close to the phones (atas), or if there's a number of them close together use some thing like a Grandstream GXW4024 24 port fxs gateway...
