yep, found some other people who have soldered to the pins on the bottom
of the card - which I have now done

Your preaching to the converted :) I would go over the top and say 10mm

My current problem though is I am getting a lot of missed interrupts, I
use 6to4 addressing and it sometimes gets in a dead loop - because my
adsl drops and it makes the digium card stop working :(
