The easiest way to expand the io ports is to use the onboard USB header.
Likely, you'll find a simple way of hooking up the GSM or temperature
sensor with USB, or you can get a USB -> serial dongle

(So far, for example the USB TEMPerHUM dongle works more reliable than the 
 GPIO based sensors... but that is mostly OS related ;-)
