Well, I'm running 7, so maybe something is different.  I haven't tried
updating to 8 yet; I'll probably just wait the almost 20 hours it takes to
compile the sources since I have a HDD in it when I do.  But, when I did the
PXE boot to do my install on a 5501 it worked for me.

The loader use to default to 9600 bps, I'm not sure if that is still the
default or not.  So, you might try setting the bios to 9600 and try again
with term set at that as well.

Had to update PuTTY; didn't realize the newer ones supported serial

Nope, still getting the corruption.  Remember, I'm trying to install, 
and I don't even know if the kernel is getting loaded yet or not.
