Hello list,

we are running some Net5501-70 boxes (BIOS version 1.33c). So far we are
using SanDisk UltraII CF cards with 2GB capacity. These CF cards are
always detected as primary master).
The OS is FreeBSD 6.4 (nanobsd) and the partitions on the CF card are
mounted read-only.
We need some persistent stored data (samba, cups, squid), so I added a
8GB SSD (Transcend TS8GSSD25S-S with S-ATA interface).
The SSD is detected as slave, as expected. No problem so far.
I got another SSD (Transcend TS8GSSD25-S with IDE interface). This one
is not detected, until I remove the SanDisk CF. (no, I didn't try to use
S-ATA and IDE SSD at the same time, and yes, I tried jumpering the SSD
as slave or c/s.) Boot message:
Pri Mas SanDisk SDCFH-2048 LBA Xlt 992-64-63 2001 Mbyte

If I switch to FLASH=Secondary in BIOS, I get a "mangled" boot message:
Pri Sla ScnEisk"sDCFH-2048 LBA Xlt 994-64-63 2001 Mbyte"
and the box hangs just before auto booting.
The following line is shown after jumpering the SSD to master:
Pri Sla Ss~Eisk"sDCFH-2048 LBA Xlt 994-64-63 8292 Mbyte

An older 2GB Kingston CF Card behaves better. After an additional boot
delay of 12s both devices are detected properly:
Pri Mas CF CARD 2GB LBA Xlt 983-64-63 1982 Mbyte
Pri Sla TS8GSSD25-S LBA Xlt 972-255-63 7811 Mbyte

If I switch to FLASH=Secondary in BIOS, the 12s boot delay is gone, but
the CF remains master and the SSD becomes slave, even if the SSD is
jumpered to master.

My questions so far:

1) Is there anybody with similar experiences?

2) Is there any combination of CF card (>1GB) and those Transcend SSDs
known to work reliably, and perhaps without boot delay?
Kingston is IMHO known to put very different chips into CF cards, so I'm
not sure to get the same (working) chip, if I buy a new one.

3) The SSD (jumpered c/s) is detected as slave, even if no CF card is
present and FLASH=Secondary is set in the BIOS, is this a feature or a bug?
