I just found something that could be interesting for some of you.

Some people are using the GPIO pins on their WRT54G to connect an SD
card. This requires an external mmc-through-gpio driver that is
available for Linux.
This could be useful, for example, for using the CF card for the OS
(read-only to maximize durability), and then the SD card for writing
(perhaps together with unionfs).

Of course, with a Soekris one could easily use the internal USB header instead.
