Clearly, using a small external switch would solve this problem.

But in general, bridging interfaces making both NIC's chatter in unison would 
create more of an interrupt load, versus using a single interface to an 
external switch.

In the past I have done net5501 iperf tests configured as a router/firewall 
(eth0 to eth1 using AstLinux, kernel 2.6.27.42) and got line speed (93.5 Mb/s) 
performance with no lockups.  Though, I didn't let the test go on for an 
extended period of time to see of heat was an issue.
