I am currently running freebsd 8.0-RELEASE on my Net 5501 and it seems utterly reliable. I have the native freebsd running a firewall/broadband router and then a mail server running in a jail, and a web server running in a another jail. It's powered by an old car battery and runs for months on end with reboots or anything.
