Well, not everybody runs Linux.One of the few advantages of firmware
(rarely actually hardware, though for RAID1-only that's relatively
plausible) RAID is that it is - or at least can be if done right -
completely transparent to software.
Yes this kind of software transparency is what it will be useful for.

I usually adopt Freebsd and of course GEOM ( module or wired in the
kernel ) can be used for a mirror, but being in "hardware" and pre - OS
is something that I tend to value ( of course without excluding the
proper tools then on the OS to monitor / inspect the array ).
