I say if you are not in a giant hurry, choose one you don't know but
think might be of value.  Even if it is just RPM-base vs. Debian-based
or some such.

I get my fill of various Linux flavors at work and prefer FreeBSD (and
NanoBSD for Soekris) for my own pleasure...and at work to when I can
get away with it which is happily fairly common.  I should taste my
own medicine and try DragonFly or some such, but have not gotten
around to it yet.

A big reason I like FreeBSD is that I feel much closer to the source
code with the ports system.  Usually if I really want to get something
working, I can hack at it long enough to do so.  When I am relying on
packages, I feel more helpless and confused when things are not
working right.  It takes time to rebuild everything from source, but
it is a constant know amount of time and it usually it solves my
problems.  That is simply not my experience when I have troubles with
package repositories (though admittedly my problems are often user
error and/or ignorance on my part.)
