Dear all,

Currently I am experimenting with the net5501 and I have a few question
on its Sata behaviour.

I am running it with a Samsung HD204UI 2TB 2.5" and as expected it
doesn't show up in the bios on boot, however, after a reboot it does
show. I guess this makes sense. As the disk is already spinning it draws
less power and can power up in time for the bios to detect the drive.

Nonetheless, even on the first boot it is detected later on in the boot
sequence by the OS. Also it is properly mounted by the OS.

Does this mean that the Soekris board supports Sata hotplugging?
Otherwise it wouldn't be detected by the OS, would it?

This brings me to my next question: it might be a nice option to be able
to connect the hdd to the board via an esata connection. There are
enough Sata to eSata + pci brackets going around. This allows one to
have the hdd outside the enclosure. However, sooner or later 'someone'
will disconnect the drive from the board by mistake while it is still
running. Can this damage the hdd or the board? If the board supports
hotplugging I guess not, though it might confuse the OS.

Could anyone tell me whether my reasoning makes any sense or perhaps I
am totally wrong.

Thanks in advance, Maarten
