I've done some additional testing.
I've got the Linux kernel 2.6.39.4 running in 32-bit mode on a Net6501
(I didn't try 64-bit).
The next Linux kernel version after 2.6.39.4 is 3.0
But 3.0, 3.0.4, and 3.0.8 (again, 32-bit) fail during startup with a
panic as was discussed earlier.
So something that doesn't like the Net6501 was introduced in the
2.6.39.4 ==> 3.0 transition.
Unfortunately with the hacking of kernel.org the changelog for that
transition has vanished.
