Well, most OSes still distribute their installers as ISOs. I usually do my installs inside VMs these days because I am lazy(attach the target disk via USB and then install to it), but the other day I actually did a USB CD install because I had the drive laying around and it was less work at the time than converting the ISO for use on a thumbdrive or fishing up an external drive enclosure.
