Actually, that it is undocumented is, I think, a major part of the
problem. One of the major reasons I dislike peecees (which here I'm
using in a very inclusive sense, including Soekris and everything else
that uses the peecee BIOS paradigm) is that there is a lot of
undocumented knowledge buried in places like the BIOS.

Pragmatically, I don't really criticize Soren for turning down my offer
of help.  But it's a case of individual sanity yielding mass insanity;
the state of the art as a whole would improve - everyone would be
better off, possibly excepting those who depend on vendor lock-in, whom
I would just as soon suffered - if BIOSes and everything necessary to
write them were documented. Indeed, all BIOSes are of necessity rather
Procrustean, forcing everyone to use the same thing; it would help
numerous small groups - too small to be worth vendor attention - if
they could create custom BIOSes for their purposes.

No, I don't really think there's any chance of that happening, for
various reasons, not least of which is the Prisoner's Dilemma involved.

I don't think I can write better AHCI code than Intel _can_. I am
fairly sure I can, given comparable levels of documentation, write
better AHCI code than Intel _does_.

There are perverse incentives operating. Intel has an incentive to
write code that's as cheap, and therefore crappy, as possible without
actually driving away customers; indeed, since they are publicly
traded, they have a duty (to their shareholders) to do so. (For that
matter, Soekris also has a similar incentive; my impression - and this
is one of the reasons I like Soekris - is that its owners find that
incentive ignorable compared to their desire to provide a good product
to their customers.)
