Hi all,
seems like I've got it working now. I decided to completely reinstall Debian,
and this time I used the boot option
debconf-priority=low

so that DPKG would ask me about pretty much all steps of the installation. When
I got to the boot loader, I decided to install Lilo instead of GRUB. Well, this
failed for whatever weird reason - and since I was too frustrated to just abort
the installation, I then chose the GRUB installation once again. This again
worked successfully, and I was then able to reboot... And well, looks like it's
working now! Debian booted successfully, but when I examined the /boot
directory, I saw that I now had files for both GRUB and Lilo. Well, I decided
to risk breaking things and ran
aptitude purge lilo
which completed successfully. After that, I rebooted once again and it actually
is still working.
So, I've got no idea at all what exactly happened here - but it turned out to
work in the end and appears to be stable so I'll stick with that. I will also
get a Net6501 tomorrow for other purposes, and hope the process of setting up
Debian on that will be more painless and smooth.
Thanks for all the help!
Robin
