I don't have a 6501. However, I do have a 5501. Have you tried to reset (warm reboot) the system? Also, keep the grub menu to text display only. I had similar problems with GRUB on my 5501 on a "cold" power ON. Grub would hang but work OK when the unit was rebooted with the reset switch. I switched to extlinux booloader (from the syslinux family). It is quite simple to install and setup. Keep in mind that the serial port console handles text. Use the KISS approach for extlinux.conf. For instance do not try the fancy menu.32 stuff for the serial console - it will *hang* the boot process. For me, extlinux has solved the "cold" power ON problem I encountered with grub, on my 5501.
