I don't know about gpio and crypto, but I installed using one of the default (3.2?) kernels (amd64 flavour) and am presently running a newer (3.11 or 3.12) kernel from backports. Both have been fine for my home server usage, so at least there's a newer config in /boot available as a starting point, if you find that you don't get everything running.
