About six years ago, I had a motherboard start to flake out in my home
firewall, which had always been an old gaming PC with a bunch of NICs and
OpenBSD- basically whatever hardware was free when the old one died.

I decided the power I was using to run those old desktops justified the
expense of buying some more efficient hardware, and decided not to build
another zombie desktop firewall.

So I went shopping for a new home firewall, something with at least four
gigabit ethernet interfaces and low power usage and OpenBSD-friendly. I dug
for a long time before I found Soekris!

I bought a 6501 and installed the brand-new OpenBSD 5.2 release. It just
worked great, and every time my network grew a physical segment, or I
needed a new VPN, or I came up with some crazy new packet filtration scheme
to play with, or my internet bandwidth increased, the little 6501 never
broke a sweat.

A week ago it died suddenly. Red Light of Doom. I swapped power supplies
and replaced all its electrolytic capacitors, and it is still not willing
to boot.

So since soekris is no more, I guess I am out. Thanks to everyone on the
list. My new OpenBSD machine will be an Edgerouter 6P, mostly because the
PC Engines APU4Cx is out of stock for a month plus. On the up side, I get
to try out an entire architecture I've never used before. It will be a tiny
adventure for me.

Thanks for being my soekris buddies all these years; I have read a lot of
messages with interest. Maybe I'll see some of y'all wherever Ubiquiti
octeon people hang out!
