Try setting "TPORT_LOG=1 ./your_test_app". You'll see all the sent/received messages printed to stdout.

Also, have you checked with sofsip-cli. Try:

sh> TPORT_LOG=1 ./sofsip_cli sip:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
UA> r
[ .. you possibly get authentication challenge ]
UA> k my:password

... and it should work ok. If you need to specify outgoing proxy or registrar (not in DNS for mysipaddress.com), you'll need to set some environment variables (see man sofsip_cli(1)).

Any ideas? After a while, I get 408 generated by the stack... Proxy
sends 401 Authorization request though...

Probably best to check with TPORT_LOG first and see whether the 401 is received by the transport module (tport).
