I'm trying to get rid of the possibility of assert() by passing --enable_ndebug to configure. It does not seem to work. I think the problem may be in m4/sac-general.m4 Starting at line 323. Shouldn't the test be just $enable_ndebug = yes, without the 'x' ? Looks like enable_expensive_checks might have the same problem.
