I am the list-owner/operator of si-list (Signal Integrity List) with something in excess of 3500 users.
For at least the past 8 years I have had the list configured to delete all attachments (be they legitimate documents, images or virii). Since instituting that policy we haven't had a single virus propagate through our system. The list is non-moderated and does not require approval to subscribe. Operating in that mode we sometimes suffer from a few head-hunter postings and perhaps 1 or 2 bouts of spam per year from some spammer who has taken the trouble to actually subscribe to the list. (those who aren't subscribed can't post). The tradeoff between manually approving each and every subscriber and dealing with a little spam (maybe .05% of the list traffic) seems to work for us. Of course as I said this was with a massive 3500 member list. The cost/benefit trade is bound to be different with a much smaller subscribership.
